Items that should be known:
Moleskin Journals (http://www.moleskineus.com/). I really can't explain how much the simplicity of these journals are. They can pretty much be used for any and everything. Currently one is being used as a scrapbook for recipes (Saveur is my favorite food publication right now) and the other is just to jot down thoughts and whatnot. Too classic.

Trieste. I really want to go there. In fact, the entire region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in the north of Italy looks really appealing. Especially in the wintertime. There was a really good article of Trieste and the local cuisine there recently in a Saveur spinoff. Also, Chestnut soup seems to be where it's at.

Mars. The most recent National Geographic has some amazing photographs of Mars. It seems unlikely that we'll ever colonize space, let alone another planet (once one realizes that Mars seems like the best bet; a planet whose atmosphere is so thin that on the ground one could wear shorts but up by their head it's so cold that full on winter gear (or more) is needed. Not to mention the fact that air would be a problem.) but to see these photos and to think what it would look like to awake to a Martian sunrise is a nice dream. For now content youself with Ray Bradbury's classic The Martian Chronicles. On a side note, National Geographic also just released a special book/magazine on Space. Some of the photos in it are just mindblowing. The minute that space exploration becomes economically fesable, sign up.
